Chapter Twenty-Seven

Sunday rolled around with church in the morning, followed by a flurry of installing security cameras. In my spare time, I started a list of people who might be interested in a gourmet lunch program but after a good night’s sleep, my hesitation returned full force, and then some. This plan sounded like a first step toward opening a restaurant, and I didn’t want that path. Needing a distraction, I tried Deputy Franklin again. Unlike my earlier calls, Franklin answered this one.

“Ms. Holloway. What can I do for you?”

His voice sounded strained. Had I called too many times? I should be as brief as possible. “Several things. First, did Ty Carvell reveal anything new about his pal’s murder?”

“The Curtis Marlin homicide is officially closed and, before you ask, Ty’s still in police custody.”

“He’s a violent man with a temper.”

“True. Doesn’t mean he’d use poison to kill someone.”

Not what I wanted to hear. Disappointment seeped through my body, souring my mood.

“On another note,” Franklin continued, “The sheriff is interested in the poker guys. Pete thought anymore about wearing that wire for us?”

I swallowed hard, not wanting to admit I’d signed a catering contract with one of those men. “Pete refused. Said he got on the wrong side of people like Gino before and it didn’t go well.”

“Circumstances change, so let me know if he changes his mind.” He paused. “Anything else on your list?”

Seemed like everyone knew about my habit of making lists. “We spent the afternoon installing security cameras. I’m certain someone’s watching me.”

“Sorry to hear about that. Let me know if you get a clear image of anyone.”

“Will do.”
